Headley Court Veterans Centre, Oswestry

Value - £6m | Client - Kier Construction

A new dedicated veteran orthopaedic healthcare facility, the first of its kind in the UK.

Headley Court is a new orthopaedic healthcare facility for Armed Forces veterans, at Robert Jones & Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry, and is a flagship project for Shropshire.

We provided geotechnical, civil, structural and MEP engineering consultancy services to support the design, tender and installation of this new £6m facility, which is the UK’s first dedicated veterans orthopaedic centre.

The state-of-the-art two-storey building includes clinic space, assessment rooms, treatment and therapy rooms, and administration, circulation and ancillary spaces. In the main entrance foyer of the centre, there is a café, along with a dedicated Veterans’ Hub.

The centre is situated within the existing hospital estate, straddling an existing underground services duct, adjoining the existing hospital and located on the main access road. We collaborated with the architect, Pinnegar Haywood Design, to further develop their proposals for the relocation of the access road around the building, and the provision of additional car parking to the periphery of the existing car park.

The client and end user’s requirements defined the structural grid, requiring us to consider the current needs and potential future uses of the building.

Shropshire-based Headley Court Charity provided a £6m grant for the pioneering new facility.

The project was shortlisted for Social Infrastructure Project of the Year at the BCI Awards 2023.

Testimonial:

“We have been engaged on a number of schemes at the hospital during the last six years including Horatio’s Garden, TSSU refurbishment, CT scanner suite installation and several lifecycle replacements for primary plant, delivering geoenvironmental, MEP and civil and structural engineering design services.

“We’re honoured to have been involved in this flagship scheme for the hospital, which celebrates another UK first for Clancy.”
