The project was partly funded by the National Environmental Research Council and included the provision of a new research facility, situated on the existing campus, incorporating state of the art environmental features to provide an exemplar building of sustainability.
The works included the extensive survey of the services infrastructure to ascertain the effect the demolition and remodelling of the site would have on the infrastructure.
In addition to providing ACE Normal consultancy services, we also provided a BRE Bespoke Licensed Assessors role, working with the design team from the initial concept design, using a design/responsibility matrix to control and ensure that all the BREEAM issues were dealt with and incorporated into the design and cost plan.
The building is compliant with a Bespoke BREEAM Excellent rating and included the use of a ground source heat pump with bore hole technology, to provide under floor heating to the atrium area and photovoltaics, coupled with a combined heat and power unit as the primary source of energy for the site, with the National Grid providing the additional energy when required.
The building will act as a Local Visitors Centre to demonstrate the work of the Environmental Research Centre for Wales. The building was designed to minimize the impact on the environment, with materials selected from the Green Guide Specification to achieve an ‘A’ rating.
